From April 2 to 4, Bogota will become the international capital of the fashion industry with the newest edition of the Bogota Fashion Week at the Ágora Bogota International Convention Center, in a showcase of the sector’s strengths and opportunities. Accounting for approximately 1.3% of Bogota's GDP, fashion has become a critical component of the city's economy and is setting the pace for design and creativity in the rest of the country.
According to Portafolio magazine, fashion is gaining momentum as part of the Creative Industries sector. In 2017, companies in the textile industry —apparel, leather goods, and jewelry and fashion accessories— engaged in formalization processes increased their monthly sales by 36%. Bogota is home to 74% of the companies in the creative industries sector, and Colombia ranks first in the continent in the export of products such as swimwear, jeans, and underwear.
The Chamber of Commerce of Bogota, which in recent years has been one of the driving forces behind the Bogota Fashion Week initiative, aims to support and strengthen the fashion industry with projects such as the Apparel, Leather, Footwear and Fine Leather Goods Cluster. These projects intend to develop and bolster Bogota's fashion industry and provide training to allow national companies take on the challenges of this growing industry that, according to the Chamber of Commerce of Bogota, accounts for more than 200,000 jobs in the city.
This new edition of the Bogota Fashion Week will once again welcome and promote local designers, styles, and brands.
The event’s hashtag on social media is #DeModaBog.
