Three tools helping teachers to teach better online classes
Following the Ministry of National Education’s declaration that online classes in schools and universities will be extended until May 30, a need arises for parents and teachers to discover tools that will support them in educating children and young people. Invest in Bogota presents three startups that will enable parents, teachers and students to make the most of technology to boost learning and personal development.
In the face of the current emergency caused by Covid-19, all classes in schools and universities are being taught online and it becomes necessary to identify new strategies and resources to keep students, parents and teachers motivated. There is a need for platforms that go beyond merely providing information and allow for interaction between students and teachers, as well as monitoring of processes, successes and challenges, to make online education as fruitful as classroom learning.
At the initiative of the capital’s Entrepreneurship Roundtable, formed by Invest in Bogota, the Secretariat of Economic Development, Andi del Futuro, the Bogota Chamber of Commerce, Bictia, Connect Bogota, Endeavor and Wayra, the following startups have been identified as being capable of providing differential, useful and high-quality tools for educators and students.
This Colombian online education platform for teachers and students from 1st grade elementary to the final year of high school offers subjects such as biology, Spanish, grammar, mathematics, personal skills, IT and English. It is different from other platforms in that its lessons are taught through gamification, which means that they involve elements and strategies specific to games, thus helping to generate excitement and engagement in students.
It also provides training for educators, as well as over 30 courses to improve their knowledge and skills in online education, strategies to enhance students’ motivation, and videos, images, texts and documents that enable them to construct their theory classes.
Given the current conditions where all students require distance education, the platform is available at no cost, as explained by Harold Cómbita, the director of Mangus.
This English learning platform offers its services across the whole of Latin America, through technology, content and immersive experiences. Its courses are currently available free of charge for all of Bogota and Colombia’s public schools. “For the duration of the Covid-19 contingency plan, students and teachers will have free access to our platform. All English teachers have to do is send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org, with the name of their school and the number of students that require access to the platform,” explains Sandro Franco, the CEO of iDo Learning.
The platform emerges as an excellent option for both teachers and schools, as it allows plans to be implemented that are aligned with the public policies of the Ministry of National Education. It also provides intelligent data on the English learning progress of the entire institution, simplifies the work of teachers through lessons and tests that are graded automatically and allows students to take the classes with or without an internet connection.
This startup offers online classes in more than 320 subjects with certified teachers in Colombia and Mexico, with the aim of enabling students from early years to university age to reinforce the topics they study in class and learn about different disciplines, which range from mathematics to dance and boxing.
The above makes it a great option for parents who lack the necessary capacity or knowledge to help with the completion of certain school tasks or explain academic subjects to their children. In this way, through the application users can select a subject, search for the teacher that best suits their needs, timetable and budget and, finally, take the class.
Amid the current situation, and based on the Maestrik’s initial motivation of tackling school dropout, its founder, Camilo Sardi, makes an invitation to keep learning and studying: “We are boosting our online classes; education does not stop, and it’s important for all of us to adopt an attitude of continuing to learn, of continuing to strengthen the knowledge that we need.”
