Bogota's weather

The weather in Bogota is ideal: the average temperature is 19°C (66°F). At night, temperatures drop to around 10°C (50°F).

If it were not for the occasional rain, the climate would be perfect!

Green spaces

The city boasts more than 5,000 public parks, including Simón Bolívar Park, which spans 113 hectares.

Bogota's culture

Bogota is home to the world-renowned Gold Museum, one of the city’s 57 museums that regularly host high-profile exhibitions, including works by Goya, Andy Warhol, and the Terracotta Warriors of Xi’an.

The city also features 78 theaters and more than 130 art venues, including museums, galleries, alternative spaces, and cultural institutions—as well as 23 libraries that are part of the Public Library Network.

UNESCO City of Music: “Al Parque” Music Festivals

Bogota is the first Latin American city to join UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network for Music, alongside Seville (Spain), Bologna (Italy), Glasgow (Scotland), and Ghent (Belgium).

This distinction stems from its rich offering of free and open-air music festivals, covering genres like rock, salsa, jazz, opera, hip-hop, and Colombian music. Rock al Parque, the largest in Latin America and the third largest in the world, attracted 340,000 attendees in 2019.

The city has over 600 live music venues, which have hosted world-class artists from both classical and popular music scenes, including Daniel Barenboim, Jessye Norman, and Deborah Voigt in classical music; Lady Gaga, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, and Roger Waters in pop music; as well as indie icons like The Killers, New Order, Morrissey, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hot Chip, Foster the People, TV on the Radio, and Yelle. 

ArtBo: Bogota's international art fair

One of the most important art fairs in South America, ArtBo welcomes over 24,000 attendees, 66 galleries from 30 cities worldwide, and 2,000 works by 450 artists. It is held every October.

Additionally, around 70 galleries and cultural centers across the city offer exhibitions featuring painting, sculpture, photography, video art, performance, and various forms of digital media.

Museums

Bogota is home to 77 museums that feature collections of pre-Columbian and contemporary art, historical, archaeological, and religious artifacts, as well as interactive technology exhibits. Notable museums include:

Gold Museum

The museum houses nearly 34,000 gold pieces and over 20,000 bone, stone, ceramic, and textile artifacts belonging to 13 pre-Hispanic societies. In addition to its permanent exhibition, it has held 204 exhibitions at major museums across all five continents.

Botero Museum

This museum features a collection donated by the artist Fernando Botero himself. It includes 208 works: 123 by Botero and 85 by international artists.

Restaurants, Cafés, and Nightlife

From Zona T to Zona G, Bogota is a city rich in gastronomy and coffee culture. When the sun goes down, a wide variety of nightlife options spring up across the city.

Main events

Bogota hosts several major cultural events, such as the Ibero-American Theater Festival, one of the largest independent theater festivals in the world. In 2017, the festival featured more than 40 plays from 15 countries, including 18 national productions and various street theater performances.

Ciclovía (Open Streets program)

Every Sunday and public holiday, over a million cyclists, joggers, skaters, and walkers take more than 127 kilometers of city streets closed to vehicular traffic.

Bogota’s renowned ciclovía has inspired similar programs in other cities, such as Summer Streets in New York City.

Bike lanes

Bogota has over 630 kilometers of dedicated bike lanes—the most extensive network in Latin America.

Public trasnport

Bogota is the birthplace of Transmilenio, a mass transit system that uses exclusive lanes and has been adopted in 57 cities worldwide, including Mexico City, Johannesburg, Jakarta, and Guangzhou.

Surrounding areas

Bogota is located on a high and fertile plateau known as the Bogota Savanna, more than 2,600 meters (8,600 feet) above sea level.

The surrounding area offers numerous tourist destinations, including charming colonial towns, temperate resorts, and the Eastern Plains (Llanos Orientales) of Colombia’s vast countryside. There are also many spots near the city for hiking, cycling, and enjoying outdoor activities.

Seguridad

Bogotá ha registrado avances significativos en materia de seguridad mostrado mejoras en seguridad en los últimos años, con una reducción sostenida en los índices de homicidio.

En 2023, la ciudad alcanzó la tasa más baja de homicidios de la última década, consolidando una tendencia a la baja que refleja una disminución de más del 30% en comparación con los niveles de 2013.
