The most common way to migrate to the country is by obtaining a visa, which is divided into three categories:
- Visitor (V): this visa is intended for foreigners wishing to visit the country multiple times or stay temporarily without the intention of permanent residence. The maximum validity of this visa is two years, and the duration of stay varies by visa type but can extend up to 180 calendar days within any 365-day period from the date of issuance.
- Migrant (M): this visa is designed for foreigners who wish to enter and remain in the country with the intent of long-term settlement but do not meet the requirements for a Type R Visa. The M visa has a maximum validity of three years, with the stay duration equal to its validity.
- Resident (R): this visa is for foreigners looking to establish permanent residence or domicile in the country and who meet specific criteria. The R visa has a maximum validity of five years, and the duration of stay is equal to its validity.
Currently, individuals from a wide range of countries can enter and stay in Colombia without needing a visa, as long as they meet the requirements for one of the three categories to obtain an Entry and Stay Permit (PIP), granted under certain conditions and for specific purposes.
